This is the day for gifts and spoiling , expressing love and thanks for the person who gave you life and brought you up.
The day we’ve chosen in Europe to celebrate mothers is one that Christians have traditionally associated with rejoicing – the Fourth Sunday in Lent, and three Sundays before Easter Day.
In the era of Downton Abbey this day was known as ‘Mothering Sunday’ when servants were given a day off to visit their mothers.
In another, older tradition people in England baked layered ‘Simnel’ cakes on this day, as a break from the Lenten fast. Simnel cakes have marzipan on top and in the middle and are topped with 12 little silver balls, to represent the twelve Apostles.
Below we offer some gift suggestions to make your Mum feel special this Mother’s Day.
